Eurovision Winner Conchita Wurst Reveals HIV Diagnosis

Austrian drag queen and bearded diva Conchita Wurst, who championed the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 with her rendition of "Rise Like a Phoenix," revealed via Instagram that she is HIV positive. The singer -- real name Thomas Neuwirth -- said late Sunday night (Apr. 15) that while she has been battling the virus for many years, she decided to go public with her diagnosis after a former friend threatened to oust her themselves. "I will not give anyone the right to frighten me or effect my life," Wurst wrote. "Coming out is better than being outed by a third party."

She also wrote that she has been under treatment for years now and that, "since I received the diagnosis...without interruption I have been below the detection limit, which means I am unable to transmit the virus." She proudly concluded, "I hope to encourage (others) and make a step against the stigmatization of people who through their own behavior or through no fault of their own were infected with HIV."
